When asked about the fact that Christopher Nkunku was not in the squad for Sunday’s game against Fulham, Enzo Maresca insisted that it was a “technical decision.”
That’s one of his favourite phrases, and it simply means that there is no medical issue to consider – it was just the coach’s decision.
Given the only attacking options on the bench without Nkunku were Tyrique George and Jadon Sancho, it’s a pretty damning move from Maresca. We would have expected him to at least keep the Frenchman there, even if he was going to be the third option off the bench. It confirms George’s status as Nicolas Jackson’s main backup, and the youngster made that even more certain by scoring the winner.
So what next for Nkunku? Moves like this only make it more likely that he leaves, and MaxiFoot in France have backed that up today by saying he will be on the market for €40m. That’s a pretty sweet price, and should mean no shortage of interest.

They say that a return to the Bundesliga is what Nkunku wants, to return to where he has had his greatest career success so far. They say that price is “affordable for an international ready for revenge.”
We have no doubt in Nkunku’s ability, but it doesn’t look like we’re ever going to see it at Chelsea. What a massive disappointment for a player we were all so excited about for a long time after he signed.
But with Bayern Munich pretty stocked in attack, it will be interesting to see which Bundesliga team is ready to take a swing. RB Leipzig don’t tend to buy players at that price, and teams like Frankfurt or Dortmund would be really stretched.
