There had been some signs of encouragement from Leicester. The Foxes managed a draw against Brighton and narrowly lost by a goal to Liverpool. Unfortunately for LCFC supporters, Saturday's match against Wolverhampton Wanderers was something of a case of one step forward and two steps back.
The same spirit and fight that could be pointed to against the Reds the previous week wasn't there at Molineux Stadium. Matheus Cunha had an overall clinic, and Wolves could have won by more than the three goals that they did end up winning by.
It's possible that the Foxes could have gained some momentum had Jamie Vardy converted his penalty. Even then, it was always more likely that Wolves would win with a four- or five-goal clean sheet versus anything else.
Bilal El Khannouss had a chance approximately 10 minutes into the second half that saw him in a good position with the ball. His shot went over, but it was something of a quality effort. In another hypothetical, that missed opportunity then saw Wolves come down the other end with a Jørgen Strand Larsen finish only moments later.
Rather than hide from the blame, following the match, the Moroccan acknowledged his role in the 3-0 defeat and what he was hoping to see from City as a whole. The midfielder explained:
"If you don't score at one side, you concede at the other one. So yes, I have to do better in those situations. That's one of my points that I have to work on. But like I said, we just wanted to keep building on the last two games."
In a season that can often see a lot of finger-pointing and a complete lack of accountability, these comments from El Khannouss are refreshing. Particularly for an LCFC side that doesn't often see a lot of possession, it makes it that much more important to finish when a clear goal-scoring opportunity presents itself.
It's unknown what a lot of next season will hold for Leicester. The only known is that it will be in the Championship. If El Khannouss remains part of the squad, having someone with his ability to raise his hand following a bad loss could be the beginning of the road back to fielding a competitive side.
