Ange Postecoglou praised his players’ composure and discipline following Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 Europa League semi-final first-leg win over Bodo/Glimt, but insisted the job is far from done.

Spurs scored after just 38 seconds through Brennan Johnson, and looked to be cruising after second-half goals from James Maddison and Dominic Solanke.

However, a late deflected effort from Ulrik Saltnes gave the visitors a lifeline and ensured the tie remains finely poised ahead of next week’s return leg on artificial turf in Norway.

Postecoglou admitted the goal did not reflect the balance of the game, but took confidence from the overall performance.

“I thought our performance was everything it needed to be,” he said.

“We were really organised defensively, calm going forward and created a lot of pressure. The goal they scored was disappointing, but if we play like that again, it will be enough to get us through.”

The Australian was full of praise for the atmosphere at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, crediting the fans for setting the tone early.

“Our supporters were outstanding. From the moment we walked out, there was a real buzz and energy, and I think that lifted the team,” he added. “These European nights have been special.”

He also confirmed that Richarlison, Maddison and Solanke were all substituted as precautions, with none of the trio expected to be facing long spells out.

“Richy was tactical,” Postecoglou said. “Madders and Dom both felt something – knee and quad – but neither of them think it’s serious. It was just sensible to take them off.”

Yves Bissouma, who came into the line-up following Lucas Bergvall’s injury in training, impressed in a deep midfield role alongside Rodrigo Bentancur.

“Biss and Rodri were outstanding,” said Postecoglou. “Lucas has done that job really well for us, but I knew Biss would be key against a team like Bodo. He had a big role and I thought he was brilliant.”

Looking ahead to the return leg, the Spurs boss acknowledged the challenge of playing on synthetic grass but insisted it would not be a factor if his side maintained their level.

“I’ve been there before with Celtic,” he said. “It’s still a game of football. If we play with the same focus and structure, the pitch will not matter.”

Despite the late goal, Postecoglou maintained a calm outlook and believes Spurs’ European form this season gives them every reason to feel confident.
