Eddie Howe is set to make his return to the Newcastle dugout after recovering from pneumonia.

The Newcastle boss has missed the club’s last three matches after he was hospitalised, with Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones taking charge in his absence.

Howe left hospital last week and took training on Wednesday, and it is expected that he will be on the touchline when the Magpies host Ipswich on Saturday.

The club said in a statement: “Newcastle United are delighted to confirm that Eddie Howe has returned to his duties at the club’s Training Centre.

“Eddie had recently been hospitalised with pneumonia and has now returned to work after a period of recovery.

“We thank supporters for their warm wishes.”

During Howe’s absence, Newcastle thrashed Manchester United and Crystal Palace, but were beaten 4-1 by Aston Villa last time out.

Asked for an update on Howe after that match, Tindall said: “Until I’m told otherwise, then obviously that (taking charge of the team) is my duty and what I have to do.

“I’ve said it before, the most important thing for Ed is that he rests and he recovers. The more he does that, then the sooner he’ll be able to come and lead the team again.

“I’m not sure if there is any contact there, but as soon as there is any more news, then I’m sure the media team will update on that.

“I certainly miss him, even more so on days like this.”

Newcastle are fifth in the Premier League table, but have a game in hand over Manchester City who sit third and only two points above the Magpies.
