Manchester United have begun negotiations for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, according to a report by Fabrizio Romano. Despite Cunha’s recent contract renewal with Wolves in February, the Brazilian striker is reportedly looking for a fresh challenge – and it seems Old Trafford could be his next destination.
Cunha has enjoyed a productive 2024/25 campaign with Wolves, featuring in 31 matches and scoring 16 goals while providing four assists. These numbers speak to his consistency and ability to impact games at the top level. Romano reports that negotiations on personal terms are already underway and that there are “good feelings” following the initial discussions.

While Arsenal and Liverpool have reportedly backed away due to “some of his antics on and off the pitch”, United remain undeterred. That in itself is telling. It suggests a confidence within the Manchester United camp—perhaps influenced by new manager Ruben Amorim’s belief in his ability to manage and inspire talent.
One of the key concerns surrounding any big summer signing for United is the club’s well-documented financial limitations. As Romano notes, “a lot of their summer business hinges on qualification for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.” That adds a layer of tension to this pursuit, as missing out on Champions League football could affect the ability to trigger Cunha’s €73 million release clause.
Yet the fact United are willing to start negotiations this early signals real intent. They’re not waiting to see how their season finishes—they’re moving proactively. It’s a refreshing approach, and one that may reflect Amorim’s influence in recruitment.
Romano also made clear that “Newcastle remain interested in the Brazil international,” reminding us that United are not the only ones circling. While Romano has not confirmed whether United will activate the release clause, it’s likely the club are exploring alternative structures for a deal, especially in light of UEFA’s financial sustainability rules.
Importantly, “both Cunha and Wolves want the player’s future to be resolved quickly,” according to Romano. That urgency could give United an edge, especially if they’re able to reach a verbal agreement on personal terms soon.
Cunha’s versatility is one of his greatest strengths—able to play across the front line, he’s not just a goal threat but a creator as well. Under Ruben Amorim’s fluid, possession-based attacking football, Cunha could flourish. The Portuguese manager’s 3-4-3 system often relies on a mobile, technically gifted forward who can drift between lines and link play—exactly the sort of profile Cunha offers.

At 25, Cunha is entering his prime, and United may view him as a long-term asset rather than a short-term fix. If Amorim is to reshape United in his vision, then targeting someone like Cunha early on makes perfect sense.
This is the kind of ambition United fans have been crying out for. After years of scattergun transfer policies and short-term fixes, the club’s decision to go after someone like Cunha—early in the window, with a clear fit for the manager’s style—feels different.
From a fan’s point of view, this move screams of a strategy. Ruben Amorim clearly has a vision, and Matheus Cunha is no random name. He’s quick, sharp in tight spaces, and technically brilliant—just the sort of modern striker who could thrive in Amorim’s high-intensity, high-possession system.
Yes, the fee is steep, but if United are to compete at the top again, they have to spend smart. And let’s not forget, this guy bagged 16 goals in a Wolves side that didn’t exactly dominate possession or create loads of chances. Imagine what he could do with Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho feeding him the ball week in, week out.
It’s also a huge plus that United aren’t spooked by the so-called red flags. That shows Amorim’s trust in his ability to manage personalities and get the best out of them. If this deal gets done, it’s going to be a big statement—and honestly, it might just be the beginning of something exciting at Old Trafford.
Bring it on.
