City will be one of 32 teams vying for glory at this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
Pep Guardiola’s side head to the United States for three matches in the group stage in the hope of earning the right to progress to the knockout stages.
Initially, we’ll play Moroccan side Wydad AC, Abu Dhabi-based Al Ain and Italian giants Juventus.
Every single match at the tournament can be watched live for free with a DAZN account.
Our FIFA Club World Cup starts with a meeting with Wydad in Philadelphia at 17:00 (UK) on Wednesday 18 June.
Here we’ll learn more about the stadium that will host that match, the Lincoln Financial Field.
After two years of construction, the stadium was opened in August 2003.
Although the vast majority of events that have taken place there have involved a different kind of football, the opening event actually saw Manchester United and FC Barcelona play a friendly.
This was the same summer that our very own Etihad Stadium began life as our home, with Barcelona, including stars like Ronaldinho, also visiting east Manchester.
The ground seats 67,594 fans for sports events, which is approximately the same as the Eagles’ former Veterans Stadium home.
Incredibly, despite its rich sporting history, Philadelphia is one of few major cities never to have hosted the Super Bowl.
The chief residents are NFL side Philadelphia Eagles.
It replaced the Veterans Stadium as the Eagles’ home and has hosted 192 NFL games over the years, with Eagles winning 118 times in their own stadium.
The Eagles were actually established way back in 1933, winning three NFL titles before the Super Bowl was created in 1967.
Since then, they’ve won the showpiece twice – including last month’s in New Orleans!
As well as Philadelphia Eagles, the stadium is home to the Temple Owls – the college football team representing Temple University.
In fact, it’s one of only five stadiums to be the home of both an NFL and college team.
The stadium is also the primary home to the Army–Navy Game. The game has been played the most often in Philadelphia due to its location between the relative bases.
Wing-like canopies above the stands are meant to evoke the team’s namesake eagle, providing a dramatic skyline, while three open corners and a signature tower and “Eagles’ Nest” balcony provide views of the field and downtown Philadelphia.
Despite several pre-season tours of the United States in recent summers, City haven’t played in Philadelphia.
However, many of the Premier League’s star names have dropped by. Liverpool and Arsenal faced off in this stadium last July, with Chelsea, Brighton, Fulham, Brentford, Newcastle and Aston Villa all playing each other in 2023.
Manchester United have played there three times between 2003 and 2010.
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will be the second international football competition to utilise the Lincoln Financial Field.
We’re the second of seven matches in this competition to be held there, with a Round of 16 match and a quarter-final also happening in Philadelphia.
The 2003 Women’s World Cup saw four group matches held at the stadium, including a 5-0 win for the USWNT over Nigeria.
Six matches of next summer’s Men’s World Cup will also be played at the stadium, including five in the group stage and one Round of 16 clash.
The stadium has held the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship eight times, including in each of the last two seasons.
NHL team Philadelphia Flyers played there in 2019 before a crowd of 69,620.
Baseball side Philadelphia Phillies celebrated their 2008 World Series triumph at the stadium, while sports entertainment events Monster Jam and Wrestlemania have also been there.
The stadium features prominently in the opening credits of long running US sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
The main characters are loyal Philadelphia Eagles fans and even try out for the team in an episode during the third season. Go birds!
The stadium has played host to music royalty of all genres, including Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, Metallica, Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, Guns N’ Roses, The Rolling Stones and One Direction.
Something for everyone!
