Southampton’s rapid relegation could be just the start of problems for the south coast side. They now face the prospect of a host star players looking to leave rather than play Championship football next season.
Southampton could be about to go through a summer sale similar to that of 2023 during which they lost stars such as Romeo Lavia, Tino Livramento and even fan favourite James Ward Prowse. Carlos Alcaraz has already played the required amount of loan games to secure a move to Everton for just over £15 million.
Despite Saints’ season not going to plan with them only achieving ten points from 31 games and only scoring 23 goals when their fate was sealed, there are still some players that Premier League clubs and teams around Europe may be looking at this summer.
Five players that could go are:
Estimated value: £50 million
The teenager has made 27 appearances in the Premier League and has been subject to interest from teams such as Tottenham, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. Reports suggest that he could command as much as £100 million but it is unlikely that any club would pay that much this year.
Estimated value: £25 million
He scored his first England goal last November and may be on the radar of clubs in the Premier League this summer. The former Manchester City player joined Southampton on loan from Pep Guardiola’s side when Southampton were in the Championship before making the move permanent this summer for £20 million. The defender has played 28 of Southampton’s 31 games this season and could be tempted to go elsewhere if an offer comes in.
Estimated value: £25 million
Despite being relegated for the third time in his career, the goalkeeper could also be one to leave in the next transfer window. The England international joined Southampton from Arsenal last summer and might need top flight football to attract the attention of England manager Thomas Tuchel ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Bournemouth goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is not signed on a permanent deal as of yet so Ramsdale could go back to his former side.
Estimated value: £20 million
Since signing from Sporting last summer the 20-year-old has played 29 games in the Premier League this season, contributing to five goals this campaign, including the Saints’ consolation against Tottenham on the weekend. The midfielder has attracted interest from Juventus as well as other sides but where he will be next season is still unknown.
Estimated value: £10 million
The winger has played 19 games for Southampton this season to date and even attracted interest from sides in the January window. FC Nantes inquired about signing the Ghanaian but ultimately did not want to bring him in permanently. However, with Southampton being relegated, things could change in the summer.
