How much Anwar El-Ghazi is estimated to be earning at Cardiff City.
Anwar El-Ghazi is set to depart Cardiff City when his deal expires at the end of the season, and the Bluebirds now face the question of whether they should renew his deal.
The former Aston Villa star linked up with the Welsh club in the summer, following his departure from Mainz after just three games with the German club. However, starts have been hard to come by for the Dutchman, which leaves owner Vincent Tan with a big decision to make.
El-Ghazi penned a one-year deal with the former Premier League side in August 2024, and with the season coming towards an end, the winger could be without a club again if the Bluebirds decide not to renew his deal.
We looked at Capology's wage estimator to see how much the wide-man is predicted to be earning, and whether a renewal would be a feasible option for Cardiff.
This season has been another disappointment for the club from South Wales, as they've spent the majority of it languishing towards the foot of the Championship table. Relegation to League One looks to be a worrying, albeit very real possibility for the Bluebirds.
The signing of El-Ghazi in the summer looked to be a smart piece of business on paper, as the Dutchman had proven to be a very solid attacker during his time with Ajax and Aston Villa. Since he was unattached as well, Cardiff didn't have to pay a fee to another club for El-Ghazi's services.
However, the ex-Ajax man is estimated to be on a fairly hefty weekly wage at the Cardiff City Stadium. Capology estimates that El-Ghazi takes home a whopping £20,000 per week, which is just over £1m per year.
With that contract due to expire at the end of the season, Tan now has to assess whether he wants to retain the winger for another season, or allow him to move on and look for a new opportunity elsewhere.
Capology's estimates put El-Ghazi as the joint-fourth highest earner in the current Cardiff squad, behind only Aaron Ramsey, Calum Chambers, and Callum Robinson. When you look at the lack of impact he's had, it would be hard to see Cardiff extending this deal next season.
El-Ghazi went almost a year without a club, following his release from Mainz, before returning to the United Kingdom to join the Bluebirds this summer. It can be forgiven that this would've taken its toll on the player, which has maybe been part of the reason he's struggled to get back up to speed with the game.
Starts and full 90 minutes have been hard to come by this season, and with relegation to League One a serious possibility, Tan will be keen to ensure that his side can bounce back up to the Championship at the first time of asking.
With that in mind, it's hard to see a world where Cardiff retain El-Ghazi this summer, unless it's on a significantly lower wage than what Capology estimates he currently earns. Regardless of the division they're in, the winger hasn't had a huge impact during his time in South Wales, and Cardiff may feel they can reinvest his wages elsewhere.
