Gary Neville, former Manchester United captain and current Sky Sports pundit, has acknowledged that Liverpool’s recent success has reignited the debate over which club holds the title of England’s most successful.
With Liverpool close to securing their 20th league title, equaling Man United’s record, Neville described the moment as “sobering” for United supporters.
This milestone has intensified the historic rivalry between the two clubs. Liverpool’s recent triumph not only matches United’s league title count but also brings their total major honors to 46, surpassing United’s 43.
Neville has admitted that the debate about the biggest and most successful club in England is over at the moment until United start getting success again.
Before the Bournemouth vs Man United match on Sky Sports, he said, as reported by Daily Mail:
‘You have to respect the team that have won the title, they have been the best team.
‘It is one of the great coaching performances we have seen, to come in and not get players, and still achieve this, you have to hand it to him.
‘But it is a sobering day.’
‘It is a massive deal. When you think of the importance of a league title, the managers at Liverpool and United always talk about your bread and butter being the league. You could debate the most successful club when United were on 20.
‘Obviously Liverpool have more European Cups, but the painful thing to say is the debate is over for a period until United become successful again and win leagues.
‘It should cause real tremors at Old Trafford. Liverpool will be the most successful club after today, and that should cause heartache and pain.
‘It took a lot to get ahead of Liverpool, and now that will be gone.’

The rivalry between Man United and Liverpool has long been a defining feature of English football.
United’s dominance under Sir Alex Ferguson saw them overtake Liverpool’s league title count, but Liverpool’s resurgence in recent years has closed the gap.
It is still up for debate who the biggest club of England is at the moment but considering how both clubs have performed in recent years and the chances of their success in future, Liverpool are in a much better condition and it is clear to see that.
