Liverpool will welcome the international break on the back of a difficult week where they crashed out of the Champions League to end their dreams of winning a treble.

The Reds were eliminated from Europe’s top-tier tournament in the last 16 by a resilient Paris Saint-Germain side who won 4-1 on penalties.

As if that was not enough, Arne Slot’s troops also suffered a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final just four days later.

Liverpool will have two weeks to lick their wounds before turning their attention to the home stretch of the 2024/25 season.

The Reds hold a 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League table and are on course to win the holy grail with nine games remaining.

It will take a historic capitulation and a spotless run of form from title contenders Arsenal to stop Slot’s side from running away with the title – but it’s not entirely impossible.

While Liverpool fans will hope that’s not the case, they’ll also be keeping an eye on the club’s summer dealings, and Jeremie Frimpong could be the first one through the door.

Liverpool want Frimpong as Alexander-Arnold contract talks stall

The Reds are preparing for life without vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold, who still hasn’t pledged his allegiance to the club amid strong links to Real Madrid.

The Merseyside giants are working tirelessly to tie Alexander-Arnold to a new contract but are preparing contingency plans if it doesn’t work out.

Frimpong is a front-runner to replace Alexander-Arnold, and a bid of around £34 million (€40m) will be enough to lure the Dutchman away from the BayArena.

He contributed to Leverkusen’s historic double-winning campaign with 14 goals and 10 assists in 47 games across all competitions last season.

Frimpong hasn’t been as prolific this term, with just four goals to his name, but he’s still a key part of Leverkusen’s bid to retain the Bundesliga title, recording 11 assists in all competitions.
