Arne Slot says he knew “for a long time” that Liverpool were going to win the Premier League title this season.
The Reds beat Tottenham on Sunday to wrap up a 20th English league title with four games to spare, ending Manchester City's run of four in a row and forcing Arsenal to again finish as runners-up.
Slot has romped to the title in his first season in charge, having replaced Jurgen Klopp last summer, and has admitted he was expecting Liverpool to be crowned champions for some time - thanks, in part, to City.
Asked by Sky Sports how long he knew Liverpool would win the title, Slot said: "A long time, to be honest.
"For almost the whole season we were on top of the league, and we had the team that was able to win it, but also you know how tough the Premier League is.
"You cannot take anything for granted but the belief for us to win it was almost throughout the whole season.
"It helped that Man City had a difficult spell, which they hadn't had in five years. That helped us a bit as well.
"When the season started, every one would have been happy if we finished in the top four. But that wasn't fair for ours players, who are much better than that."
It is a second league title in five years for Liverpool but the first they have been able to celebrate in front of their own fans in 35 years, having five years ago seen celebrations largely cancelled by the Covid pandemic.
Slot continued: "It is difficult to put into words. The scenes here and before the game tells you more than I can describe.
"[The fans being here] is what makes it special. Three or four years ago they won the league. It was an amazing accomplishment, but the fans weren't there. So you can feel how important it was for them to be here. And the boys did an outstanding job today, including our fans."
