Liverpool stand on the brink of Premier League glory, yet their manager Arne Slot remains firmly grounded ahead of Sunday’s trip to the King Power Stadium.
With Arsenal faltering and the Reds maintaining momentum, the title could be secured this weekend if they beat Leicester City and Ipswich Town manage to upset Mikel Arteta’s side.
Despite the prospect of an early coronation, Slot is not entertaining thoughts of lifting the trophy just yet. “My thoughts are not on that at all,” he said in his pre-match press conference. “My thoughts are, as always, on Leicester and on our team: how to improve, what can we do better.”
Liverpool’s 2-0 win over West Ham United last weekend – secured through goals from Luis Diaz and Virgil van Dijk – was another display of their growing maturity. Slot’s side did not dominate throughout but did enough to capitalise on Arsenal’s dropped points against Brentford.
That has been the theme of Liverpool’s season: an ability to edge tight contests while maintaining consistency in the most competitive league in the world.
Slot has been keen to emphasise this resilience, particularly when some critics have questioned their recent performances. “We’ve won five out of the last six games,” he noted. “We’ve won many games with one or two goals’ difference. That tells you how good this league is and how hard it is to win a game of football.”
While others may reflect on what has been achieved, Slot remains focused on the immediate challenge. “I’m living in the moment,” he said. “I’m not looking backwards and I’m not looking forwards a lot because it’s the type of person I am… the only thing you’re thinking about as a manager is: there’s a game coming up, and we need to win that.”
As Liverpool chase their second league title in five years, Leicester City find themselves facing a very different reality. Seventeen points from safety with six matches left, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team are staring down relegation.
Even a win against the league leaders would not be enough to save them if other results do not go their way. It has been a season defined by struggle and, with five home matches without a goal, the Foxes appear ill-equipped to delay what feels inevitable.
The contrast between the two sides could hardly be starker. While Liverpool prepare for a possible celebration, Leicester may be forced to confront the final confirmation of their slide back into the second tier.
Yet for Slot, the focus remains unchanged: “One game at a time and influence the one we can influence, and that’s the Leicester game.”
