Manchester United’s season has gone from disappointing to downright dismal and the defense has been one of the biggest culprits.
Ruben Amorim’s side has leaked goals all year long, and despite the big-name arrivals of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, a solid partnership at the back has yet to emerge.
Now, United might be turning to a familiar face to solve their defensive crisis.
According to A Bola, Manchester United have received a major boost in their pursuit of Gonçalo Inácio, as Sporting CP are now willing to negotiate for significantly less than his €60 million release clause.
Sporting are reportedly ready to cash in on the 23-year-old for €45 million (£39m) due to financial difficulties — a cut-price deal that has immediately put United on alert.
Amorim, who coached Inácio during their time together at Sporting, is eager to reunite with the defender, whose understanding of his tactical system could be invaluable heading into next season.
United could be heading for a major defensive shake-up, with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, and Jonny Evans all linked with exits this summer. That leaves a gaping hole in the backline — and Amorim sees Inácio as the ideal solution.
The Portuguese international offers versatility, composure on the ball, and crucially, a pre-built familiarity with his manager’s high-pressing system.
At €45 million, he might be one of the smarter defensive investments United could make in a summer where every signing has to count.
