Norwich City: If nothing happens, these 7 players are going to leave Carrow Road

FLW have looked at whether the Canaries should keep or let go the nine players that are out of contract at the club this summer

Norwich City face an uncertain summer transfer window with the tough task of keeping the likes of Borja Sainz and Josh Sargent at the club, but aside from that duo, they could also sanction the exits of numerous first-team regulars that are coming to the end of their respective contracts.

The Canaries' season has been one of twists and turns, and with little under a month to go until the curtain is drawn on another Championship campaign, a play-off place is still achievable, but looks slightly out of reach.

Johannes Hoff Thorup will already have an idea of what he wants to get out of the upcoming transfer window. Sainz and Sargent's futures are both up in the air, and seven first-teamers are officially out of contract this summer, so it could be a real summer of change at Carrow Road.

FLW have looked at those seven players, some of whom are senior regulars, while a couple are still finding their feet in the game, and weighed up whether Norwich should move to extend their deals past June 30, or let them leave on a free transfer to find a new challenge.

Angus Gunn

Scotland international Angus Gunn has a long-standing affiliation with Norwich, given that his father, Bryan, is a club legend, and he was born in the area, but he is coming to the end of his fourth full season as a player at Carrow Road and is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Gunn has been the Canaries' first-choice keeper for the last three campaigns in the second-tier, but despite previously impressing, he has come in for criticism this season for some poor performances that have led Hoff Thorup's side to now have one of the worst defensive records in the division.

The 29-year-old has admitted that he has had "no communication" over any potential new contract, and, given his age and lack of form this season, this summer does feel like the right time to move on so the Danish boss can bring in his own number one.

Emiliano Marcondes

Emiliano Marcondes joined Norwich on a free transfer last October after he was released by Bournemouth in the summer and failed to find a new club for the first few months of the season.

The 30-year-old had previously been a key player in the Championship with the Cherries and Brentford, and played under Hoff Thorup at FC Nordsjaelland. His capture has proven to be a masterstroke over the last few months, with double figures in combined goals and assists so far.

Marcondes is a wise operator on either wing or as an attacking midfielder, and he certainly has a lot more to give at Carrow Road past this term. He has expressed his desire to stay on for next season, and the Canaries should definitely exercise their one-year extension option in his contract so he stays as a part of their squad for 2025/26.

Jacob Sorensen

Jacob Sorensen has been a reliable performer in midfield for the Canaries since he made the move from Esbjerg fB in 2020, and the club moved to extend his stay at Carrow Road by another year last summer after he had impressed in their push for the play-offs.

This term has seen him have less of an impact on the team under Hoff Thorup, and the January arrival of Jacob Wright from Manchester City will likely see him move further down the pecking order as time goes on, if he was to extend his contract this summer.

Norwich should offer the 27-year-old a new deal, under the guise that he is a back-up option in the middle of the park from now on. Whether he accepts those terms is a different story, but he may well be happy to stay at the club regardless, depending on any other offers that might come his way.

Onel Hernandez

Onel Hernandez is a Norwich legend for his exploits at the club under Daniel Farke from 2018 to 2021, and while he is still highly-regarded in NR1, his influence on their fortunes has waned massively in recent seasons as he has entered his 30's.

The Cuban international surpassed 200 appearances for the Canaries earlier this term, and it is fair to say that this summer feels like a natural end for him at the club, given how little he has started games under Hoff Thorup.

Hernandez' contract does have a one-year extension option that the club could trigger, but if they want to undergo a proper squad overhaul this summer, he should be allowed to leave with best wishes for the rest of his career.

Archie Mair

Scottish shot-stopper Archie Mair has long been thought of as the eventual heir to the number one shirt at Carrow Road, after he joined the club as a highly-rated youngster from Aberdeen in 2019, but at 24-years-old, he has struggled to prove himself anywhere and could leave this summer.

Mair has been out on seven different loan spells over the last five years, most recently at Scottish Premiership side Motherwell earlier this year, where he made one appearance and then was promptly recalled by the Canaries just weeks later due to a hand injury.

Given his age and previous experience, it does feel as if Mair is unlikely to ever get the chance to prove himself in Norwich's first-team, with the likes of Gunn, George Long and Vicente Reyes ahead of him in the goalkeeping pecking order. They should not offer him a new deal this summer, as a result.

Jonathan Tomkinson

USA youth international Jonathan Tomkinson has not made a senior appearance for Norwich since October 2022, amid loan spells at Stevenage, Bradford City, and Ross County, who he is playing for currently.

Tomkinson is now 22-years-old, and, much like Mair, the route for him to become a first-team regular looks to be blocked by the numerous players ahead of him in Hoff Thorup's thinking.

Norwich do hold the option to extend the centre-back's deal by another year, but they should not look to keep him past this summer. Also, given how much he looks to be enjoying his spell with the Staggies, Tomkinson himself may well want to depart permanently to forge a career for himself away from Carrow Road.

Lewis Shipley

Lewis Shipley is in a similar position to that of Tomkinson, given that they play the same position, and he is just a year younger at 21-years-old.

Shipley is yet to feature for the Canaries' senior side since signing his first professional contract in 2021, but he has experienced a taste of first-team action out on loan at Accrington Stanley and Cheltenham Town.

His time with the Robins came to an early end in January, after he had made just eight league appearances in the first-half of the campaign. It is clear that he faces a struggle to make it at Carrow Road, and without any option to extend his deal by another year, the club should not offer him fresh terms this summer.
