Is Alexis Mac Allister the most underrated player in Liverpool‘s title-winning team?
The Reds claimed their 20th English top-flight title at the weekend, and everyone in the squad is receiving their plaudits. But it feels as though, across the season, Mac Allister has been overlooked at times.
The Argentine put in a fantastic performance for Liverpool in their win over Tottenham Hotspur, and he’s been performing at that level for most of the season. Mac Allister ranks sixth in the Premier League for tackles at 95, and also fares well for possessions won, despite being played in a few different roles across the campaign.
Mac Allister is one of three Liverpool players in our Team of the Week for Gameweek 34, with Newcastle United also boasting a trio of entrants. But Wolverhampton Wanderers have gone one better, with four players included.
We’ve used our Squawka Score to determine the 11 picks, based on the statistical leaders for metrics relevant to their positions. And as ever, we’ve thrown an honourable mention XI for good measure.
Robert Sanchez won the Man of the Match award during Chelsea‘s win over Everton, and it was deserved. He prevented 1.19 goals at Stamford Bridge, making three saves including one late on to seal the win. Despite a couple of nervy moments, the Spaniard was also strong in the air, with his five crosses caught the most of any goalkeeper in the Premier League this weekend.
Honourable mention: Kepa Arrizalabaga (78%)
Kieran Trippier rolled back the years with his performance against Ipswich Town, providing two intentional assists during Newcastle’s 3-0 win. The Englishman didn’t have to do much defensive work against the now-relegated Tractor Boys, instead chipping in with 12 completed passes into the final third and six successful passes into the penalty area. Trippier also had two touches in the opposition box himself.
Honourable mention: Kenny Tete (66%)
Wolves continued their climb up the Premier League table with a sixth consecutive win at the weekend. Emmanuel Agbadou was a rock at the back for Vitor Pereira’s side with five clearances and two tackles won alongside five possessions won in the defensive third. He was also reliable on the ball with a retention rate of 90.91%.
Honourable mention: Levi Colwill (72%)
Another member of Newcastle’s defence against Ipswich, Dan Burn found the net for the Magpies, but that’s not why his Score is so high. The Englishman boasted a retention rate of 94.03% and was part of a defence that faced just 0.11 non-penalty Expected Goals. Burn himself made five clearances, won five aerial duels and possession three times in the defensive third.
Honourable mention: Toti Gomes (71%)
LB: Rayan Ait-Nouri (Wolves)
Rayan Ait-Nouri thrived in Wolves’ win over Leicester City at the weekend. The wing-back was a menace down the left flank with four take-ons completed, seven touches in the opposition box and one intentional assist. As part of Wolves’ defensive unit, Ait-Nouri also helped restrict Leicester to just two shots on target while he was on the pitch.

Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions thanks to their win over Tottenham and Alexis Mac Allister bossed the midfield battle. Mo Salah went into the weekend having gone six games without a goal across all competitions, but that streak was finally ended against Tottenham.
