In an interview with L’Équipe, former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher was asked about PSG this season and what their chances were in the remainder of the UEFA Champions League. Les Parisiens secured their place in the final four of the competition after defeating Aston Villa in the quarter-finals.
The Ligue 1 champions have shocked many in the knockout stages of Europe’s premier competition after their dismal performance in the league phase. At one stage, PSG were at risk of not qualifying for the play-off rounds and were a long way adrift of qualifying automatically for the last 16. However, with impressive performances against Liverpool and Aston Villa, the French capital club find themselves in the semi-finals where they will face another Premier League team – Arsenal.
Les Parisiens have enjoyed a stellar season domestically too. With only one defeat in Ligue 1 and a Coupe de France final on the horizon, Luis Enrique’s men could yet complete a famous treble.
Asked if he was surprised to see PSG in the semi-finals, Carragher said, “I would have been surprised by this question at the start of the season. PSG didn’t seem to have enough talent to reach this stage of the competition, or to win it. But in the second half of the competition, they’ve been very good… PSG have been perhaps the best team this season.”
