Despite shelling out over £100 million on two forwards in the last two summers, Manchester United will again be on the market for a new No.9 when the window opens.
Indeed, it’s safe to say Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee haven’t had the desired effect supporters had initially hoped, although the latter’s silky style of play has seen him move up in people’s estimations in recent weeks.
As for Hojlund, 22, his young age has given him some leeway when it comes to enduring substandard form. That’s not to say Ruben Amorim hasn’t been expecting more from him this season, but there’s a general acceptance that he should have been originally bought in to develop and refine his goalscoring abilities alongside a senior, more experienced strike partner.
United have already been linked with a host of names who are poised to be on the move this summer, primarily Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres. However, it does seem as though speculation is more fan-driven than anything else at this stage.

Of course, either player would revitalise the Reds’ frontline tenfold. Gyokeres, in particular, poses as the more realistic target due to his prior connections with the United boss, having played 68 games under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, scoring 66 goals.
The Old Trafford faithful have been encouraged to perhaps lower their expectations in regards to the Swede and Osimhen, however, as David Ornstein has provided a slightly deflating reality check over INEOS’ transfer intentions.
“We expect them to have room to manoeuvre in the market, but there will definitely be some caution when it comes to splashing big money on big names, as we’ve seen in the past,” the transfer expert penned in The Athletic. “That’s not to say they won’t be able to do it, more that we’re hearing their preference will be to continue what has been their approach more recently – younger talents costing lower transfer fees and salaries, who fit Ruben Amorim’s system/style and can develop into top players with increased market value.
“So I’d imagine there will be further recruits along the lines you mention rather than going for the likes of Gyokeres and Osimhen. Please don’t hold me to that because you never know in this unpredictable industry, but that is the direction of travel being explained to us.”
