Chris Wilder has had his say after Leeds United's Patrick Bamford was seen mocking the Sheffield United boss following their promotion.
Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder insists he had no problems with Patrick Bamford after the Leeds striker started a chant directed against him during their promotion celebrations.
The Yorkshire rivals have been in a battle for promotion all season along with Burnley, and the Blades have ultimately fallen short as they have to settle for the play-offs.
Leeds confirmed their promotion on Monday, and it understandably prompted wild scenes around the city, with the players and fans celebrating together.
During the partying, footage emerged of Bamford leading a song against Wilder, which many Leeds fans loved.
As well as the local rivalry, the clubs were in a promotion battle in 2019, and Wilder branded Bamford a ‘muppet’ when the Blades had gone up ahead of Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
So, that may have been in Bamford’s mind when he had a dig at Wilder, and the Sheffield United boss told the Yorkshire Post that he had no issue with the song, as he revealed he had a conversation with the striker and Leeds boss Daniel Farke.
“I'm a big boy, you give it you take it. You give it out locally, you take it locally as I've always done. We have our moments, other teams have their moments. I had a conversation with Pat yesterday, and I've no issue at all with it. I'm not sure about the words from by a fellow pro but I appreciate and respected him giving me a call and we had 20 minutes.
“I spoke to Daniel as well and had a half-hour chat with Daniel Farke. He's a top guy. They're a top team and a top football club.
“When I was playing we used to give it and take it. It's part of the game at every level, even on a Sunday morning. That's part of the interesting part of the game – local rivalries, rivalries between teams and players, everything that goes with it. I've got absolutely no issue. When you give it, you take it, you have to get on with it.”
This is a sensible comment from Wilder, and, as outlined above, he has had digs at Leeds in the past, so it’s right that they give it back after their success.
It has been a great battle between the top three this season, and whilst Sheffield United pushed Leeds and Burnley close, they had a wobble recently and that has proven costly.
That will be difficult for Sheffield United fans to take, but they must now turn their attention to the play-offs, as they still have a chance of reaching the Premier League, which was the only objective this season.
