Liverpool now know the exact scenario that will see then clinch the Premier League title on Sunday.
Following Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, the Reds are now 12 points clear at the top of the table, having played one game fewer than their closest challengers.
In fact, with four Premier League fixtures remaining the maximum points total the Gunners can finish with is 79. This is the total that Arne Slot’s side are currently on which means they are effectively already champions when taking their superior goal difference into account.
However, Liverpool will mathematically guarantee a record-equalling 20th top-flight championship by avoiding defeat at home to Tottenham this weekend.
The omens for Liverpool are good ahead of the game as Spurs’ last win at Anfield across any competition was all the way back in 2011 when Harry Redknapp's side defeated Kenny Dalglish's Reds 2-0 thanks to goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric.
Should the Merseyside outfit get the result required to be crowned champions of England on Sunday, attentions will immediately turn to the trophy presentation.
Even if Liverpool avoid defeat against Tottenham to win the Premier League with four games to spare, captain Virgil van Dijk will not get his hands on the trophy immediately after the game.
This is because it’s a tradition that the Premier League trophy presentation is not held until the final weekend of the season.
The Reds are at home to Crystal Palace on the final day, May 25, so that is when van Dijk, Slot and the rest of the squad will get their hands on the biggest prize in English football.
