Mark Hudson has made a promising start to senior management, convincing the Cardiff City board to hand him a contract until the end of the season after replacing Steve Morison in the dugout.
Considering the Bluebirds almost completely rebuilt their squad in the summer, there have been plenty of reasons for optimism about the current group and their potential in the coming seasons, through their displays in the first half of this term.
Having said that, they are just two points above the bottom three as we edge towards the January transfer window and survival will be the priority once again, even though Cardiff are competing in just their fourth campaign since relegation from the Premier League.
Here, we have taken a look at two things that will be on Hudson’s Xmas wish-list…
A striker
Striker is the one position on the pitch that the Bluebirds are lacking some depth in.
Callum Robinson is not a specialist number nine, and with Hudson only playing with one central striker at the moment, it feels like they could be better equipped.
Kion Etete was an exciting pick-up from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, but it would be naive to rely on him to score enough goals to keep them in the division.
Cardiff are defensively strong, but are where they are because they have only found the net 20 times in 23 league encounters this season.
Bringing an experienced and proven second tier striker, like Jordan Hugill whose contract is up at Norwich City at the end of the season, would be a smart move to reduce relegation fears.

The results to earn him a new contract
The Bluebirds’ hierarchy have been hesitant to show faith in managers since Steve Morison stepped in for Mick McCarthy last season.
That approach is understandable having gone through Neil Warnock, Neil Harris and McCarthy in a short space of time, but Hudson would love a bit more job security at this stage of his managerial career.
Morison, his predecessor, was dismissed earlier on in the campaign when his contract ran until the summer of 2023, and it would appear likely that Hudson will not earn anything more than another one-year deal at the end of the season.
However, if the Bluebirds can pull away from the relegation picture over the Christmas period and improve their squad with some shrewd additions, a top half finish is not unrealistic, given the fact they are only five points behind 12th position at this stage.
The former Cardiff centre back is slowly winning over the supporter base, but needs a winning run to remove any doubt about his credentials in the dugout.
