FC Barcelona recently triumphed in their Spanish Super Cup semi-final fixture and now find themselves waiting for their opponent in the final. By defeating Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Club, La Blaugrana have already booked their place in the final. All that remains to be seen is whether it is Real Madrid or Mallorca that ends up joining Barcelona there.
However, there are certainly some decisions that Hansi Flick will have to make heading into that final irrespective of who the opponent is. While some decisions might seem clearer than others, they are still issues or tactics that the head coach of any team must try to get spot on.
In Flick’s case, one of the biggest guarantees would be the return of both Dani Olmo and Pau Victor. To make the most of their return, some other player will likely see their playtime take a hit. However, if there is one position where too many rotations is a rarity, that would be the position of the goalkeeper between the sticks.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the recent displays from 34-year-old Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny have been strong enough to give Hansi Flick some real food for thought. Having trusted Inaki Pena so far this season, perhaps this could be a turning point for both the Spaniard and the Pole.
In the first two games of this year so far, the first against UD Barbastro in the Copa del Rey and now this recent Spanish Super Cup clash against Athletic Club, Wojciech Szczesny has kept two clean sheets. While the Copa del Rey game was relatively an easy outing for the Pole, Athletic Club tried to test him even further.
With a top performance like that in the last game, Hansi Flick will certainly have a lot to think about. Having played the entirety of the game, he racked up some good numbers as well. By making five saves, being strong in his aerial duels, collecting possession 17 times, completing 43 passes and taking 71 touches, Szczesny had an amazing game and has been rightfully praised for it so far.
