FC Barcelona have issues to solve both on and off the pitch. Currently, despite no Spanish football ongoing, the club is grappling with the registration issues involving Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor and working against the clock to reach a solution.
On the pitch, Hansi Flick also has issues to solve. The impeccable start to the season under the German coach seems to be a thing of the past and the scintillating October that the team enjoyed seems more like an aberration than anything else.
Players like Frenkie de Jong will have to step up in the second half of the season if Barcelona want to salvage this season. Having surrendered the title initiative, senior players need to step up when the odds are stacked against them.
The €45m-rated Dutch midfielder in particular has failed to showcase his best level since returning from a serious ankle injury. He has lost prominence in midfield and needs to start performing if he hopes to work his way back into the starting XI.
A lot is being said about Frenkie in recent times and the 27-year-old has taken some time out to address the media himself with an interview with Voetbal as quoted by Mundo Deportivo. The ex-Ajax man has admitted that he would leave Barcelona if he felt he could not contribute enough. He said:
“People think I want to stay at Barcelona forever because life outside of football is very good here—and it is good—but what happens on the field is still more important. If I felt that I couldn’t contribute enough or that the team couldn’t compete, I would leave.”
Frenkie has made it very clear that he would not stay in Barcelona just because life outside football is great in the city. This clearly shows that the Dutchman is determined to return to his best level and help the club win trophies.
Fans do not have much goodwill to give to Frenkie but one would have to trust that the Dutchman’s heart is in the right place. He is returning from a long-term injury that has affected his mobility and slowly yet surely, he should get better.
It remains to be seen if Frenkie can live up to his words and find a way to contribute enough and help the team compete. Being one of the club captains, he needs to take responsibility and let’s hope 2025 is a better year for the 27-year-old star.
