Five of the best football fixtures for you to watch this weekend, including an unexpected top-four battle in the Premier League and Antonio Conte’s date with his old side.
Here are our five must-watch games.
Few would have had this as a Champions League shootout in pre-season but the Premier League’s surprise packages go head-to-head this weekend. Forest have won seven of their last eight and moved level on points with second-placed Arsenal last time out, while Bournemouth are 10 unbeaten and flying under Andoni Iraola.
Will the Cherries’ high-intensity football triumph? Or can Forest find joy on the counter? It’s a fascinating showdown between two teams dreaming of European nights.
That it has been scheduled for 3pm on Saturday is criminal. Do better, broadcasters.
Atletico Madrid lost top spot in La Liga last weekend after a shock setback at Leganes. Though their winning run was ended, Atleti bounced back in Europe to beat Bayer Leverkusen in a chaotic clash.
Julian Alvarez continued his fine form since returning from the winter break and will be out to down the Yellow Submarine this weekend. Villarreal sit just outside the top four and thrashed European rivals Mallorca 4-0 on Monday night.
Two of Germany’s heavy hitters collide tomorrow when RB Leipzig host Bayer Leverkusen.
Leipzig’s leaky defence has proven costly during the current campaign and the hosts are outside the Champions League places as things stand. Last weekend, Leipzig blew a three-goal lead to draw with Bochum – conceding all three of the shots on target they faced.
An overdue midweek win in Europe was the ideal response, while Leverkusen arrive in Leipzig having lost in the Champions League.
The Bundesliga champions will be eyeing revenge on Leipzig, who are the only side to beat Leverkusen domestically in 18 months. Leverkusen’s historic 43-game unbeaten run was ended by Leipzig in August and Xabi Alonso’s side have not lost in domestic competition since.
Manchester City meet Chelsea in a contest that could have ramifications on the battle for Champions League football. Fifth hosts fourth in the Premier League, with both teams looking to address unconvincing recent performances.
City’s recent renaissance ended in midweek as Pep Guardiola’s side blew a 2-0 lead to lose at Paris Saint-Germain. Familiar flaws were exposed and Chelsea will hope to follow that blueprint at the Etihad. It’s a clash surrounded by narrative, with Chelsea well-stocked with ex-Manchester City alumni.
Enzo Maresca worked on Guardiola’s coaching staff, while Cole Palmer, Jadon Sancho and Tosin Adarabioyo are all likely to line up against their old side.
Napoli took control of the title race last weekend after a thrilling win over Atalanta.
Antonio Conte is chasing the Scudetto with a third different team, having lifted league titles with Juventus and Inter Milan. He faces his former team this weekend as Juventus arrive in Naples.
The Turin side are down in fifth but, incredibly, are yet to lose in the league this season. Thiago Motta’s side have been draw specialists, with 13 of their 21 games ending all square. If Napoli can overcome their stubborn visitors, their title belief will grow.
