Ajax will have to do without Remko Pasveer, the club announced this week, as the veteran goalkeeper suffered a muscle strain during European midweek action.

Pasveer (41) was injured in the Europa League match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday and afterwards coach Francesco Farioli confirmed things were not looking good.

Talking on Ajax’s official channels, Pasveer himself described his pain, “When I played the ball in, I unfortunately immediately felt that something was wrong. This afternoon I had a scan in the hospital and it confirmed a groin injury.

“Because of this I will have to rehabilitate for at least a few weeks. Of course, I will do everything I can to return as soon as possible. How soon that will actually be remains to be seen.”

Matheus (32) will temporarily take over the first-team keeping responsibilities. Annoyingly for the Amsterdam outfit, the Brazilian goalkeeper is not registered for the Europa League, so young Jay Gorter will have to take on continental duties.

Pasveer’s contract expires next summer. What happens after that is unclear, but a contract extension still seems to be a possibility.
