Sheffield United reignited their automatic promotion hopes with a much-needed 2-0 win against Cardiff City at Bramall Lane, bouncing back from a difficult run of three consecutive losses.
After a scrappy and uneventful opening half, the deadlock was finally broken thanks to a moment of brilliant improvisation from Gustavo Hamer. The midfielder showed poise and precision to flick the ball through Cardiff goalkeeper Ethan Horvath’s legs, giving the Blades the lead just before the break after Tyrese Campbell’s deflected shot landed in his path.
While chances remained at a premium, Hamer almost doubled his tally late in the first half with a superbly struck free-kick that shaved the outside of the post, leaving Horvath stranded.
Cardiff, to their credit, posed a threat in bursts, particularly from set pieces and quick counter-attacks. Defender Will Fish came closest for the visitors, volleying just over the bar from a corner, as Omer Riza’s side looked for a way back into the match.
However, any hope of a comeback was crushed in the 87th minute when substitute Ben Brereton Diaz sealed the win. A deflected effort from Kieffer Moore landed kindly for the forward, who kept his composure at the back post to slot home and wrap up a hard-fought but deserved three points for the Blades.
After the match, manager Chris Wilder admitted to SUTV that the win was a weight off the players’ shoulders following a difficult spell.
“We had to take care of business. It was an emotionally draining week for everybody, the players and the supporters. I thought [the supporters were] outstanding in trying to raise us and give us energy, and they certainly did that.
“In my experience, whether as a player or a coach or a manager, I’ve had little periods where you lose games of football and sometimes the hardest one is getting that first one over the line so we’ve done that. A huge sigh of relief I should imagine when Ben closed the game out at 2-0. The players have done what they needed to do.”
While the performance may not have been spectacular, Wilder emphasised the importance of the result: “The performance was okay, the result was big. It keeps us alive and kicking.”
Tactically, Wilder highlighted the importance of keeping the ball moving at speed and the defensive setup against Cardiff’s direct approach.
“[In possession] ball speed was key. They went with two big lads up top and tried to go direct, but I thought Anel and Rob were excellent physically. Hamza at right-back and the whole back four were solid,” he said.
“We tried to be patient, but at times we made poor decisions. I think we just need to chuck the shackles off a bit more going forward. Today should help us with that.”
Wilder had high praise for Rob Holding, who stepped up in the absence of Jack Robinson. “I thought Rob Holding was fabulous, we’re going to have to have a little peek at him because he’s not played a lot of football recently. He added, “Jack didn’t train Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. He wasn’t 100% and we needed 100% players. The two or three days will allow him to recover even more, he was good enough to go on the bench.”

With the win, Sheffield United maintain hope of finishing in the top two, but their margin for error is slim. Monday night’s trip to Turf Moor to face Burnley now becomes a make-or-break fixture.
Wilder commented on Sky Sports: “Belief is a massive thing for us and hopefully today will give us a little bit of a confidence booster after the three defeats. Up until a week ago, we were the outstanding away team in the division. So we need to put in a big performance and hopefully that comes with a big result. We are not a negative side. We’ve got 27 wins on the board and we need a few more between now and the end of the season.”
