The Serie A title could be settled in a one-off “final” if Inter Milan and Napoli are level on points at the end of the season.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, explain that the Nerazzurri and the Partenopei could face off at the San Siro at the end of the campaign.

Inter Milan and Napoli are now level on 71 points at the top of the Serie A table.

Inter lost for the fourth time in the campaign. They fell to a 1-0 defeat away to Bologna.

On the other hand, Napoli ground out a 1-0 win away to Monza on Saturday.

Therefore, the Serie A title race is looking tighter than ever.

And the title race will not come down to the teams’ head-to-head records. Nor will goal difference be decisive.

The Lega Serie A changed the rules around top spot as well as the relegation places after the 2021-22 season.

That campaign saw Inter and AC Milan play out a title race that went right down to the wire.

Now, if there are two teams level at the top of the table at the end of the season, they will face a playoff match that is essentially a “final” to determine the winner of the title.

This has actually already happened in the relegation battle. At the end of the 2022-23 season, Hellas Verona and Spezia were level on points for 17th and 18th spot.

Verona prevailed in a relegation playoff thriller.

There has yet to be a “final” to determine the title winner, however.

That could change soon, however. There is a very real chance of Inter Milan and Napoli finishing level, with both on the same points total right now.

As the Corriere highlight, it would likely be played at Inter’s home stadium, the San Siro.

The first determinant for the location would be head-to-head record. And that is all square, with Inter and Napoli having drawn twice this season.

Then, the next determinant would be head-to-head goal difference. Also all square, as both matches ended in 1-1 draws.

Therefore, it would then go down to goal difference, and then goals scored. Inter look to be well out in front in both of these.
