The United States weren’t good enough to qualify for the World Cup in a ridiculously easy region and Eric Lichaj wasn’t even good enough to play a single minute in their failed qualification campaign.
So surely that means Lichaj is not very good, right?
Well, Arsenal found out on Sunday that the Nottingham Forest full-back has plenty of quality.
Lichaj scored a brace, including a sublime volley, to send his side into the break with a 2-1 lead in their FA Cup third round tie.
The first goal told us more about Arsenal’s shocking defending than about Lichaj, as he headed in from about a yard out.
But the second was a triumph of technique as he controlled the ball on chest on the edge of the box and send a looping volley into the top corner.
And his celebrations are every bit as good as his ball-striking.
It turns out that Lichaj has never previously scored more than two goals in a single season.
But amazing things seem to happen when Arsenal’s defence is involved and the American now has three for the 2017/2018 campaign.
