On their way to Tuesday's DFB-Pokal semi-final at SchücoArena, 3. Liga side Arminia Bielefeld had previously knocked out Hannover 96 of the 2. Bundesliga and three Bundesliga clubs in Union Berlin, Freiburg and Werder Bremen.

Against reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen, Die Arminen pulled off another sensational upset, winning 2-1 to book their place in the DFB-Pokal for the first time in the club's history.

The match started to the favorites' liking as Jonathan Tah put Bayer Leverkusen ahead in the 17th minute. After a corner, Amine Adli nodded the ball to the back post for the centre-back to slot home.

But Arminia responded immediately and equalised through Marius Wörl. Piero Hincapie failed to deal with a cross and the ball fell to the 20-year-old, who buried it into the bottom corner.

The 3. Liga side came close to taking the lead midway through the first half when Noah Sarenren Bazee found himself one-on-one with Lukas Hradecky, but his shot was saved by the Finnish goalkeeper.

But Bielefeld eventually made it 2-1, with Maximilian Grosser poking the ball into the roof of the net at the back post from a free-kick just before half-time.

The home side continued to cause the champions problems after the break, and for much of the second half it looked more likely that they would extend their lead than that Leverkusen would equalise.

Arminia almost made it 3-1 when Joel Gradowski shot just wide in the 69th minute. Five minutes later, at the other end, Jonas Kersken was forced to make a fine reflex save to deny Victor Boniface from making it 2-2.

Die Werkself came closer to levelling the scores as the game wore on, with Patrik Schick directing a header against the post in the 81st minute.

But the equaliser never came, and Bielefeld held on for a 2-1 victory to book their place in the DFB-Pokal final at the Olympiastadion for the first time.

They will meet the winner of Wednesday's other semi-final between RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart.
