The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes for the Swiss as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the Wefox Arena.
Following a goalless first half, Géraldine Reuteler’s 51st-minute goal put Switzerland ahead. The visitors responded well and two goals from former Manchester United forward Signe Bruun handed Denmark a 2-1 victory and spoilt the celebrations for Swiss centurion Maritz.
Despite being born in the United States, Maritz has dual citizenship and therefore qualifies to represent Switzerland on the international stage. The defender made her senior debut for the Swiss national team at the Cyprus Cup in 2013. Since that maiden appearance, the player has been a regular for her country, participating in all three of Switzerland’s major tournaments appearances. Maritz is set to play in a fourth major tournament in 2023 with Switzerland having qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Switzerland have no further matches scheduled for the current international window therefore Maritz will soon return to Arsenal and turn her attentions towards next Saturday’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United at The Emirates Stadium.
