Arsenal face fresh competition from Atletico Madrid in their bid to sign long-term transfer target Benjamin Sesko.
Sesko has been on Arsenal’s radar for several months with the Gunners failing in a bid to sign the RB Leipzig striker last summer. The Slovenia international turned down interest from England to sign a new deal with the Bundesliga side.
However, Sesko is set to be subject of new approaches at the end of the campaign. The 21-year-old has scored 17 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions and is Arsenal’s leading target to solve their centre-forward issues.
Mikel Arteta expressed his disappointment at the club’s failure to sign a forward in January, with Arsenal’s title challenge having stuttered in recent weeks. Season-ending injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus have left Arsenal without a recognised forward. The North Londoners failed with a bid to sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa in January.
Spanish outlet El Nacional are reporting that Arsenal could face competition from Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone is a huge admirer of Sesko and is keen to parter the forward with Julian Alvarez at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Sesko’s new contract last summer removed a €65m (£55m) release clause, though there is understood to be a gentleman’s agreement between the player and Leipzig should suitable offers arrive in 2025.
Leipzig are also at risk of missing out on Champions League qualification. The German outfit are currently sixth in the Bundesliga, three points adrift of fourth-placed Mainz. The absence of Champions League football would increase the likelihood of Sesko’s sale.
