Gonzalez has established himself as a key player in the squad. He has netted five goals and as many assists in 24 games this season so far. He is averaging 2.1 tackles, 0.4 interceptions, and 1 clearance per game (stats via whoscored).
The Spanish midfielder is versatile enough to don different roles in the middle of the park. He provides solidity with his defensive traits. At the same time, he has got great dribbling and creative skills with remarkable aerial presence.
Arsenal’s interest in Nico Gonzalez is understandable as their two midfielders in the form of Jorginho and Thomas Partey are in the final year of their respective current contracts. Notably, they both are also on the wrong side of the 30.
Hence, the Gunners need to invest in young talents to maintain the strength of their squad. From that perspective, the acquisition of Gonzalez could be a great move as he is versatile, has great qualities, and can serve for many years to come.
The 22-year-old would fit well in Mikel Arteta’s system given his style of play. However, his price tag of €60 million seems unreasonably high. Hence, Arsenal will think multiple times before landing an official offer for the emerging talent.
