Arsenal are expected to sign a new striker this summer and according to Sky Sports, the Gunners have set their sights on Lille forward Jonathan David.
The Gunners are expected to compete with West Ham United and Barcelona for David’s signature, although more European clubs could join the race in the coming months.
Mikel Arteta was on the market for a new centre-forward during the January transfer window when injuries decimated his team, but nothing materialised.
Arsenal hold a long-standing interest in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.
The Bundesliga side were not interested in letting Sesko leave in the middle of the season, but Arsenal are expected to return for his signature in the summer.
Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak is also on their radar, but the Magpies are not willing to discuss a deal and have slapped a mammoth £150 million asking price on the Swedish forward.
Isak has been tipped as one of the best strikers in the Premier League after bagging 19 goals and five assists in 14 league games this season.
While he remains a dream target for Arsenal, the Gunners are exploring other cost-effective alternatives like Lille’s David.
As per Sky Sports, Arsenal are preparing to submit an official bid to sign David, whose contract with the French side expires at the end of the season.
The 25-year-old forward has proven to be a consistent and prolific marksman since joining Lille in 2020, netting 105 goals in 220 appearances for the French club.
He has also made an impact on the European stage, scoring eight times in 12 Champions League matches this season.
Arsenal will face serious competition for David’s signature from a host of continental rivals, including West Ham, who have made him their priority target.
The Hammers have reportedly tabled an offer to sign David, while Barca are also exploring a move for the Canadian striker as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who turns 37 next season.
Arsenal are waiting to appoint a new sporting director before making their move for David. Multiple reports claim former Atletico Madrid director Andrea Berta is the frontrunner to replace Edu.
