Gunners will need huge fightback at St James’ Park next month to reach Wembley after semi-final first-leg defeat
Arsenal face a daunting task to reach the Carabao Cup final after being defeated 2-0 at home by Newcastle on Tuesday night. The Gunners suffered their first home loss in any competition since last April in the first leg of their high-profile last-four tie to deepen the sense of frustration after an insipid 1-1 draw at Brighton on Saturday that saw them drop more points in the Premier League title race.
Long-time Arsenal transfer target Alexander Isak was the star of the show for in-form Newcastle, who have now won seven games in a row, continuing his incredible run of scoring form by firing in the opening goal of the evening off the underside of the crossbar before half-time despite accusations of a push on Martin Odegaard, and after Gabriel Martinelli had smashed against the post for Arsenal and Jurrien Timber headed over a corner from mere yards out.
Things got worse for the hosts after the break when Isak forced a fingertip save from goalkeeper David Raya and Anthony Gordon beat Timber to turn in the rebound, with Kai Havertz also wasting a glorious chance to halve the deficit to leave Arsenal with a mountain to climb heading to St James’ Park for the second leg next month.
