We all know that Mikel Arteta is fond of weaving unconventional methods into his coaching of the Arsenal first team.

The All or Nothing documentary on Amazon Prime Video from a few years back showed the world how much he uses props and metaphors to motivate his troops ahead of big games.

The Basque native also likes to introduce sound where possible, infamously piping in chants and crowd noise from Anfield ahead of facing Liverpool away in the Premier League. “Mentally, the game starts right now,” he bellowed before You’ll Never Walk Alone started reverberating around Colney.

The Gunners were subsequently smashed 4-0.

Arsenal will be looking to avoid the same outcome this Wednesday when they travel to Real Madrid for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final. After winning the home leg by three goals, that scoreline would knock them out of the competition.

Arteta has not opted for more live match ambience on this occasion, but he did incorporate music into Tuesday’s training session before flying out to Spain.

The 43-year-old revealed earlier this year that he played samba music prior to their encounter with Dinamo Zagreb to “build the energy” of the players. He’s gone for the same approach ahead of facing the 15-time European champions.

When the squad came out for their warm up, Arteta blasted out some house music from a giant red speaker. That was followed by some happy hardcore before “Charge!”, the fairground tune commonly heard at baseball or ice hockey matches in north America, rung out.

The Arsenal boss then gathered his players to hold hands in a big circle, telling them “we need to reconnect with life”. That surreal moment preceded a dance song with some piano mixed in, at which point the public section of training concluded.

Arteta evidently wanted to oversee a lighthearted session to imbue his players with some good vibes ahead of the biggest match of the season to date. Let’s see if it pays off.
