Aston Villa have opened talks to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Marco Asensio in the January transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Villa will have money to spend before the end of the transfer window after they agreed to sell Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr for €77 million.
Unai Emery’s side have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel, but they face strong competition from Tottenham and other Premier League clubs.
Romano says that Villa have now turned their attention towards signing an attacking midfielder, and they have earmarked Asensio as one of their targets.
What should encourage Villa is that the former Real Madrid winger would be willing to move to Villa Park.
Chelsea midfielder Joao Felix is Emery’s first-choice target in the January window, and Villa have made contact to sign the Portuguese attacker. However, it appears that Asensio is also becoming a major option for them.
Romano wrote on X: “Understand Aston Villa are in talks with PSG for Marco Asensio, one of the main names on their list.
“Villa also made contact with Chelsea for João Félix earlier this week, another option depending on the formula. Asensio would be keen on Villa move.”
Villa have already signed Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia this month, and more players are expected to arrive before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Asensio has found himself way down the pecking order under Luis Enrique, who has preferred Kang-in Lee, Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembele and Destiny Doue in the starting lineup ahead of him.
The former Spain international won three Champions League titles with Real Madrid, but his move to PSG has not worked out properly.
Following the arrival of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli earlier this month, PSG would be more than happy to offload him.
