Graham Potter kicks off his West Ham reign tonight
Graham Potter takes charge of West Ham for the first time tonight as the Hammers head to Villa Park in the FA Cup third round. Appointed yesterday as Julen Lopetegui's replacement, Potter will be aiming to get off to the best possible start. It’s been eight years since they failed to navigate past this stage of the competition.
The Hammers, though, are not in great form with one win in their last five games, and go into the cup tie on the back of heavy defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City. A trip to Champions League side Villa is a daunting first test for Potter, who is back in management after almost two years of unemployment.
Villa are a mixed bag at the moment results-wise but they are strong at home, suffering just two losses across all competitions so far this season. Kick-off at Villa Park is at 8pm GMT. A huge night for Ollie Scarles, who makes his first domestic start for West Ham and only the second start of his career, after a 90-minute appearance against FCSB of Romania in the Europa Conference League in November 2022.
That's some time ago now, and Potter clearly feels it's an opportune moment to hand another to a 19-year-old who has appeared twice off the bench in the Premier League this season. The West Ham faithful will hope he fares well at left-back.

Graham Potter has explained how he’s been able to prepare the West Ham side for tonight’s FA Cup tie in such little time.
“We’ve had a day in the hotel today, so we’ve gone through some things,” he told ITV. “It’s been really good, the response has been brilliant, I can’t have asked fr any more in terms of how the players have taken on little messages.
“You can’t give too much because there’s not that much time.”

Unai Emery has also decided to freshen up his Aston Villa side for tonight’s cup tie.
There’s no Emiliano Martinez in goal or Lucas Digne at left-back as Robin Olsen and Ian Maatsen are handed runouts.
Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers is back after suspension and replaces John McGinn.
