FC Barcelona have several contracts to resolve in the coming months. The renewals of players like Pedri and Gavi are expected to be straightforward, with no complications anticipated in their signing new deals to stay at the club.
However, the same cannot be said for Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araújo. De Jong, in particular, has been at the center of a long-running saga over the past few years and is arguably the most challenging renewal to finalize.
According to Diario AS, Barcelona could face a significant hurdle in renewing the contract of 27-year-old Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, whose performances this season have been underwhelming. Since returning from injury, De Jong has struggled to rediscover his best form, leaving fans with little goodwill toward him.
On the surface, the basis for negotiating a new contract with Frenkie de Jong seems straightforward. Barcelona are keen to offer him a renewal, and the Dutchman has expressed his desire to stay at the club. However, that’s where the simplicity ends.
According to the report, Sporting Director Deco is keen to offer Frenkie de Jong a new contract but with a significant reduction in wages. Ultimately, it hinges on whether the Dutch midfielder is willing to accept a pay cut to remain at the Catalan club.
Currently, one of Barcelona’s highest-paid players, Frenkie de Jong has seen his prominence decline significantly over the past 12 months. Midfielders like Pedri, Marc Casadó, and Dani Olmo have all surpassed him in the pecking order.
That said, what one can say with absolute assurance about Frenkie is that, if he can rediscover his pre-injury level, he will be one of the best midfielders in the current squad. What he brings to the table is truly unique.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Frenkie and whether he finds a way to reach an agreement with the club over a new deal. Only time will tell how it actually plays out.
