Barcelona’s defensive lineup for their upcoming clash with Atletico Madrid raises several questions, particularly regarding who will partner Inigo Martínez in central defence.
While the uncertainty around Lamine Yamal’s potential replacement is understandable, the situation at the heart of Barcelona’s defence is equally important to consider.
One key figure who could feature is young Pau Cubarsi, who was benched during Barcelona’s last match against Leganes due to a combination of factors.
His mistake, which led to a penalty against Dortmund, along with a few questionable tactical decisions, saw him sidelined.
Despite this, there is a strong possibility that the talented youngster will start in the upcoming match, though Hansi Flick has other defensive options to choose from.

To begin with, Garcia was solid in his performance against Leganes, despite being involved in the set-piece goal conceded.
He played for 74 minutes and showed good form throughout. Though Garcia has had a mixed time at Barcelona since his move from Manchester City, his return to full fitness has provided Flick with an additional reliable option at the back.
If he starts, he will provide a steady presence in defence, alongside Inigo Martínez, against a formidable Atletico side.

On the other hand, Ronald Araújo’s inclusion remains a riskier option. The Uruguayan has not featured since the summer, and starting him in such an important match might be too soon.
However, he has been training with the team for several weeks, and his natural aggression and resilience could make him an asset if brought on as a substitute.
His pace and strength could be useful if Atletico’s manager, Simeone, opts to bring on a physical forward like Alexander Sorloth.
More mobile players like Antoine Griezmann or Julian Alvarez could test the defensive capabilities of either Cubarsi or Garcia, who might be more adaptable to their style of play.
