FC Barcelona were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Getafe away at Coliseum Alfonso Perez this past weekend.

However, the match was not without its fair share of controversy, as the Catalans were denied what appeared to be a clear penalty late in the contest.

Just past the 80th-minute mark, Jules Kounde, who had scored the opener for the Blaugrana, was hauled down inside the Getafe box by Christantus Uche.

Barcelona appealed for a penalty, only for the referee to wave play on, while surprisingly, the VAR did not intervene either.

Joan Laporta lashes out

Naturally, the Barcelona camp was far from pleased with the match officials and their decision.

And even though Kounde opted to stay silent on the matter after the match, Barça president Joan Laporta has lashed out at the refereeing, calling it a ‘disgrace’ and the decision to not award a penalty ‘a scandal’.

“The refereeing in the Getafe game was a disgrace. He didn’t award a penalty to Kounde. It’s a scandal. It’s a scandal,” said the Barcelona chief, as captured by El Chiringuito TV.

The anger from the Blaugrana president is understandable considering that the penalty could have been the difference between a win and the eventual draw that they secured at the Coliseum.

Furthermore, the result has allowed Real Madrid to open up a seven-point lead over the Blaugrana at the top of the table after the reigning champions beat Las Palmas 4-1 on Sunday.

It also meant that Barça have collected only six points out of a possible 24 from their previous eight La Liga matches – their worst run in 50 years.
