The brass at La Liga giants Barcelona are ready to offer a new, and vastly reduced contract to a member of the club’s midfield ranks.
That’s according to Diario AS, who point towards Frenkie de Jong as the player in question.
De Jong, for his part, has of course seen his name take its place front and centre in the headlines in Catalunya’s capital for several months now.
As much comes as the 27-year-old’s ongoing struggles for game-time give rise to mounting speculation that De Jong could be sold next summer.
The former Ajax man is due to see his contract terms expire in the summer of 2026, with Deco and the Camp Nou board therefore having a major decision to make when it comes to a potential renewal.
And, as alluded to above, if the latest word stemming from the media on Tuesday is anything to go by, then, despite claims to the contrary, a contract extension offer is indeed being considered.
As much, however, will come with a catch.
As per a report from AS:
‘The Blaugrana club believes that the midfielder, who is one of the highest paid in the squad, should reduce his salary considerably, something that his representatives consider acceptable up to a certain level.’
It now remains to be seen if the parties can find common ground.
