Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury very early in the season was a big blow for Barcelona as they lost their captain and first-choice goalkeeper for a prolonged period.

In fact, following his surgery, it was suspected that the German international might not play again this season.

But Ter Stegen has made great progress on his recovery and has already started training on the pitch with the ball, giving rise to hopes of him making a comeback before the season ends.

Ter Stegen on potential return

During a media appearance earlier today, Ter Stegen provided an update on his recovery and potential comeback before the season is over.

“I’m fine. I’m working to get back this season. We’ll see if I can do it,” said the 32-year-old Barcelona captain on his recovery.

Reports suggest that the month of April is seen as a possible period for the veteran to make his comeback.

Ter Stegen also commented on the Blaugrana’s chances of winning the treble this season, given that they are currently on top in La Liga, are in the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League and have made it to the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

The Barça skipper, though, was measured in his response, insisting that the team must take it step by step, starting with tomorrow’s Champions League game against SL Benfica.

“We have to go step by step. First, we have to win tomorrow in Lisbon,” said the former Borussia Monchengladbach ace.

Ter Stegen on refereeing

There has been a lot of noise surrounding the refereeing in La Liga in recent weeks, with Real Madrid, in particular, going at war with the system.

Amidst all the noise and controversy, Ter Stegen sent a message of calmness, saying: “Football is perhaps not perfect, but it always tries to adapt, looking for the best, trying to go to a higher level.”

On VAR, he commented: “There are always doubts because that’s also technology, one day maybe we won’t have to worry about anything and just enjoy ourselves, but you can’t take responsibility away from the refereeing.”

Continuing, he added: “You have to help the referees because it’s very complicated. I sit in front of the TV and see that it’s clearly offside, but then I see six or seven replays and they decide in a second.

“We have to believe in VAR because it makes it easier for them to make decisions and take responsibility.”
