FC Barcelona are atop LaLiga with 66 points after this weekend’s action. Their impressive season under manager Hansi Flick has seen the German manager match a record held by current Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique.
Barcelona cruised to a 4-1 victory over Girona in the Catalan derby, with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice in the second half.
The win keeps Barcelona at the top of La Liga with 63 points, three ahead of second-place Real Madrid. However, the victory was about more than just holding onto the top spot.
The win in the Catalan derby has allowed Flick to match Enrique’s record from the 2015-16 season with nine consecutive La Liga victories (h/t Barca Universal).
This streak mirrors the brilliance of Enrique’s 2015-16 team, which went on to clinch the La Liga title. Flick, with his high-pressing style and focus on fluid play, seems to have rekindled that same winning mentality.
Barcelona has earned all 27 points available from its last nine matches, a run that began with a win over Valencia on January 27. Along the way, it has triumphed over tougher opponents like Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, and Real Sociedad.
It’ll be interesting to see if Barcelona and PSG meet in the UEFA Champions League final, as both teams are on opposite ends of the bracket.
