As reported by Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich have opened new talks with Joshua Kimmich after a previous offer was withdrawn from the club.

It’s yet another turn in this contract extension saga – some might say this has had more back and forths than Wimbledon – and you could be right.

Kimmich has been debating for months whether to sign a new contract with Bayern or try a new adventure elsewhere.

As previously reported, Kimmich was in talks with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and FC Barcelona. However, after a long debate, the German international looked set to stay with the Bavarian giants as a new deal was being finalised.

Once a new contract was offered, Kimmich stalled before Bayern decided to withdraw it. Perhaps the midfielder did not truly know what he wanted. Bayern appeared annoyed by the stalling and began looking for replacements.

Fresh Talks

Now, it appears both parties are willing to hash it out once again. New talks have started this week, and Bayern’s executives are not expecting any decision before this Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen.

The club remains open to new negotiations whilst Kimmich’s mind is still open.

As reported in a  GGFN opinion piece last week, Kimmich must look at the bigger picture with this decision. In recent weeks, it’s clear that Bayern are building for a successful future. They’ve recently announced the contract extensions of Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, and Dayot Upamecano while on the cusp of winning a title.

Yet, Kimmich is still unsure and doesn’t want to commit. At 30, it’s understandable before wanting to sign another deal, but it’s unclear what he’s hoping for. Is he after a big money move to Real? Or perhaps somewhere in the Premier League? It remains to be seen. It feels as if Kimmich has been trying to play both sides without really knowing what a successful outcome for himself looks like.
