Bayern Munich have several decisions to make regarding the futures of senior players. The Bavarian club is holding contract negotiations with multiple players who have entered the final year of their current deals. Leroy Sane is one of the players at Bayern who can talk about a free-agent deal with interested clubs in January.
At this point last season, it looked like a matter of time before Sane signed a new contract at Bayern. The German winger was enjoying a good run of form under Thomas Tuchel, and the Bavarian club was also eager to keep him.
The departure of Tuchel, groin injury, and dip in form during Ruckrunde have changed the contract situation around Sane. The club chiefs continue to suggest talks continue over a new deal. Sane is also prioritizing an extension with Bayern over a possible free transfer in the summer. However, murmurs in Germany suggest Die Roten are having second thoughts about giving a new deal to Sane.
According to AZ, a contract extension for Leroy Sane is looking unlikely. The German winger’s inconsistency has been a cause of concern ever since he arrived from Manchester in 2020. As things stand, there is a significant chance of Sane leaving Munich in the summer.
It is no secret that Bayern will go all out for Florian Wirtz in the summer. Bayer Leverkusen will ask for a nine-figure fee, and the German youngster will also command big wages. Die Roten need to balance the wage bill, which could lead to the departure of Sane.
The 28-year-old winger is one of the top earners in the squad. With Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman getting back to their best under Kompany, there is a case for Bayern to part ways with Sane to make way for new additions. Nevertheless, there will be clarity over Sane’s situation in the coming weeks as Bayern are expected to conclude significant contract talks during the winter break.
A return to the Premier League can be an option for Leroy Sane in the summer. Manchester United have been heavily linked with the German winger, but he has poured cold water on suggestions about return to Manchester. Considering their form in the Premier League, the Red Devils are unlikely to offer Champions League football to Sane next season.
Arsenal have also been linked with Sane. A reunion with Mikel Arteta could benefit Sane since the North London side is on an upward trajectory. Sane worked with Arteta at Manchester City in the past. The German international will weigh up his options once Bayern make their stance clear about a contract extension.
For now, Sane’s priority is to stay in Munich. The 28-year-old winger will need to do better than he did against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday to convince club chiefs to offer him a new contract.
