Bayern Munich are expected to sign at least a couple of attacking players in the summer. They are looking to sign Florian Wirtz and one winger with Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman on the departures list.
Along with the senior wingers, there has been speculation around the future of Paul Wanner at Bayern going ahead. The young attacking midfielder has been playing for Heidenheim this season. He started the campaign strongly, but his numbers have dipped as Heidenheim struggled in the Bundesliga. They are currently staring at the possibility of getting relegated from the Bundesliga.
Despite a dip in form, Wanner is getting ample amount of exposure at the Bundesliga level this season. He will return to Munich as a better player with the valuable experience of first-team football at Heidenheim.
Bayer Leverkusen have been linked with Paul Wanner throughout the season. Some reports in Germany have suggested that Wanner could be part of the deal involving Florian Wirtz moving to Munich. However, Bayern have a completely different stance on the future of Wanner.
According to SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern are planning to extend Wanner’s contract at the end of the season. The Bavarian club wants to secure Wanner’s future until 2027, which certainly rules out a permanent transfer in the summer.
The report from SportBild also reveals that Bayern are planning another loan move for Paul Wanner. The record Bundesliga champions want Wanner to play for a club that will be playing in European competitions. It remains to be seen if Bayern have a preference for a Bundesliga side or a club outside Germany as a loan destination for Wanner.
PSV Eindhoven had shown concrete interest in Wanner last summer. The Dutch side could be a good destination for Wanner next summer since they are likely to play in the European competition. Along with European exposure, Die Roten also need Wanner to play for a club where he will get minutes every week.
In an ideal scenario, Wanner will return to Bayern in 2026 and be a part of the first team options. Die Roten will have more clarity on how their attack is shaping up in the long run by the end of next season and where Wanner fits in the squad.
Along with sorting out the contract extension, Wanner also has a decision to make about his international football career as Germany and Austria compete for his services.
