Des Lynam puzzled football fans everywhere by urging Manchester United to hire Gary Neville as their head coach.

The Red Devils have already made one managerial change this season when they sacked Erik ten Hag in October following a dreadful start of the season. Ruben Amorim took over in November following a brief spell from caretaker coach Ruud van Nistelrooy.

However, the Portuguese tactician has yet to steer the club back on the right track, as he continues to work with a squad that is arguably ill-suited to his 3-4-2-1 formation and football philosophy.

Needless to say, Amorim needs time to prove his worth at Old Trafford, and despite enduring one of the worst starts to managerial tenures in the club’s history, the Reds are beginning to display encouraging signs under his watch.

Nevertheless, Lynam feels there’s a much more suitable candidate for the role out there. The veteran BBC presenter and broadcaster believes United shouldn’t look beyond Gary Neville in an astonishing statement that hardly resonated with the club’s supporters who expressed their bemusement on social media.

The 49-year-old’s last managerial stint dates back to his time at Valencia in the 2015/16 campaign. The Englishman only lasted 28 matches before getting the sack on the back of a poor run of results. Since then, the Man Utd legend retreated to punditry, cementing himself as one of the best in the business thanks to his colourful personality and snarky remarks, in addition to his tactical knowledge of course.

Nevertheless, Lynam urges the club to trust their old captain with the hot seat, considering him an ideal candidate to restore the club’s character.

“On Sunday night, Ruben Amorim was reported to have told the players that they were the worst team ever to have represented United,” wrote the 82-year-old in his latest column for The Telegraph.

“He is the sixth full-time manager since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson to have a tilt at trying to make them a successful team again. At the moment, the supporters of this once-great club have little faith in him having any more luck than all the others.

“A few years ago I suggested that the only man who could steer United back to their former glory was their one-time captain Gary Neville. I put it to him and while I touched something of a nerve, Gary made it clear that his business interests and his punditry for Sky would take precedence over any thought of engaging in football management again.

“But here goes – Neville would still be the best man for the job. He has Manchester United blood running through his veins. He is deeply hurt by the club’s present predicament. He has a powerful personality and would be a strong presence in the dressing room. Neville has remained the best candidate, in my mind. He is hugely successful as a broadcaster but then almost every Tom, Dick and Rio has had a go at that.

“Apparently, Neville has made a great deal of money from his business exploits but will he be remembered for them? If he were to save Manchester United, he would be forever remembered. He is tough and would be ruthless when needed.”
