In order to really revitalise the disjointed Manchester United squad at his disposal, Ruben Amorim may take a leaf out of Erik ten Hag’s book of pursuing his former players.
According to French football expert Fabrice Hawkins on Friday evening, the Red Devils have submitted an offer for Paris Saint-Germain’s wantaway fullback, Nuno Mendes.
Contract talks between both parties have now reached a ‘standstill’ after PSG’s previous wage proposal did not meet the player’s demands, as he wants his salary to accurately reflect the integral role he plays at the Parc des Princes.
Mendes, 22, made 47 appearances under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon before departing for the Ligue 1 giants in 2022. Over two years later, he was still quick to wish his former boss well after learning of Amorim’s move to United.
“I think I just have to congratulate him,” Mendes told reporters. “I think he is a coach who has done everything for football and is having great success in football. But I think he has the potential to do much more than what he has already done.
“I just want to wish him the best of luck, both to him and to the [Portuguese] players and coaches abroad. I think it is very important [that Amorim succeeds at Man United], and that is all I have to say.”

The 33-cap Portugal international is growing resigned to a transfer away from PSG, which has alerted numerous clubs to his potential availability in 2025. Understandably, his side are entirely unwilling to sanction a mid-season sale and hope an agreement can be reached that sees him extend his current terms.
Alas, United will be waiting in the wings, keeping tabs on how the situation pans out. The prospect of reuniting with Amorim and playing an instrumental role at the heart of his rebuild may prove tempting for Mendes, who has been identified as an option to succeed Luke Shaw long-term.
