Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor admitted that she was frustrated to see her side held to a 2-2 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion at Broadfield Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It was just the second time that The Blues have dropped points this season in the Barclays Women’s Super League. Chelsea took the lead through Sandy Baltimore but goals from Marisa Olislagers and Vicky Losada saw the game turn in the hosts’ favour. Lauren James then netted a second-half equaliser to ensure that Chelsea’s unbeaten run continued.

When speaking to the media after the match, Chelsea boss Bompastor admitted that it was a frustrating result for her side.

“I’m disappointed and frustrated about the result,” Bompastor said. “We didn’t start the game with the right intentions.

“You could feel the difference between the first half and the second half for us. We were able to score quickly, but we need to realise that football is a game about being efficient, scoring goals and keeping good possession of the ball.

“If you want to hurt the opposition, you need to sometimes have more of a vertical game and be able to play the balls behind the back-line, especially in the first half.

“We were brave in the build up and we possessed the ball, which is good, but when you have the opportunity to play forward, that’s where you can hurt the opposition.”

Despite her frustrations around the result, Bompastor was pleased to see her side continue their unbeaten record.

She said “I said to the team at the end, of course, it’s really frustrating because we love to win and hate to drop points, but we have to look at the bigger picture. We are five points clear and that’s the main thing.

“We need to realise no game is going to be easy until the end of the season. We need to keep the right mindset and be ready to attack every game with the right intentions.”

Janaury transfer window signing Naomi Girma was handed her first Chelsea start but picked up an injury during the game. Bompastor gave a summary of the player’s first Blues outing.

She said “She’s learning about the league, the team and her teammates. As you could see, the first game is never easy because it’s a competitive league.

“It was good for us to have her start this game, building minutes and being able to play with the team. We’ll need to assess her, but it doesn’t look too bad, we will see.”

Chelsea return to Barclays Women’s Super League action on Wednesday evening when they host Leicester City.
