Borussia Dortmund’s wait for a first away win of the season in the Bundesliga goes on after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday evening.
In what was an intense Borussen derby, Borussia Dortmund could only manage a 1-1 draw away to Borussia Mönchengladbach. The result means that their wait for a first away win in the Bundesliga since April goes on and leaves Nuri Sahin’s side 12 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich.
Jamie Gittens was on target once again for Borussia Dortmund, continuing his stellar run of form. But Pascal Groß gave away a penalty, allowing the home side to equalise through Kevin Stöger. There was to be no winner, although Gladbach ended the game with ten men after Tomáš Čvančara was sent off.
Borussia Dortmund were quick out of the blocks and some excellent play from Jamie Gittens resulted in the first chance of the game in the sixth minute. But Marcel Sabitzer fired his shot just wide of goal. Another chance fell Sabitzer’s way in the 27th minute but he couldn't keep his header down.
Serhou Guirassy then had his overhead kick well blocked as Borussia Dortmund continued to push for the opening goal. Jamie Gittens also forced a save from the Gladbach goalkeeper, but BVB had to settle for a goalless first-half despite all their dominance.
Gladbach showed more desire to venture forward in the first-half, making the game a bit more end-to-end.
But Borussia Dortmund remained the team in control and were finally rewarded in the 65th minute when Jamie Gittens proved to be the difference maker once again.
The winger dribbled his way past two defenders, drifted inside, before smashing the ball into the net via the crossbar in sublime fashion for his fourth goal in his last four games.
Gladbach nearly equalised moments later, only for Gregor Kobel to pull off an excellent save. But as Tim Kleindienst looked to score on the rebound, Pascal Groß brought him down, and the referee awarded the home side a penalty.
Kevin Stöger stepped up and scored from the spot to bring Gladbach back on level terms with 20 minutes to go in the contest.
A combination of Gregor Kobel and the crossbar denied Borussia Mönchengladbach the opportunity to take the lead ten minutes later, with Robin Hack coming close to adding to BVB’s away day woes.
