Brighton have officially announced the signing of Mats Wieffer from Feyenoord, paying €30m plus add-ons for the midfielder. The 24-year-old has signed a five-year deal at the Amex valid until June 2029. Brighton announced the signing of Wieffer late on Friday night, with technical director David Weir stating that the club are ‘delighted’ to have brought Mats to the club, adding that Wieffer had been admired by Brighton for a long time.
The Dutch defensive midfielder is expected to be a regular starter for Brighton next season. Over the last two years he’s featured 79 times across all competitions for Feyenoord, winning the Eredivisie title during the 22/23 campaign and the KNVB Cup last season. Now, the Rotterdam club have made a huge profit on Wieffer’s departure, having spent just €750,000 on him from Excelsior in 2022. Mats Wieffer has officially become Feyenoord’s record departure.
The player struggled with an ankle injury last season, which also kept him out of the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024. Now he’s fit again and will be looking to make a mark at the Amex under new Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler. This could turn out to be a brilliant bit of business from the Premier League side, who last week completed the signing of former Feyenoord loan star Yankuba Minteh.
